Education of Process
Gundrilling was originally developed to generate the hole in gun barrels. This concept allowed for drilling through the full length of the barrel without retracting the tool. Most commonly, this process is used for drilling long, straight, smaller diameter holes in a variety of materials. Self-centering bits are the key to drilling long holes while maintaining a high level of accuracy. A depth-to-diameter ratio of 300:1 or more can be common depending on the type of tooling used. The speed of drilling depends on the material being drilled, but typically it is done at high speeds and low feed rates.
